Diapering and breastfeeding your baby occupy the daily life of the new parent.

Faced with such a tiny body, you are likely to feel anxious and worried about hurting your baby when changing diapers. Relax! Practice makes perfect, and after getting the hang of it, you will succeed in changing the diapers.

Read on to learn how to change a diaper. We will explain the steps and tips in detail.

How do You Know It’s Time to Change a Diaper?

For new parents, there may be two deemed extreme cases: if you are too nervous about the diaper, you may change diapers over frequently and waste a lot of diapers which are by no means cheap; if you overlook this issue, your baby will be put into a predicament of comfortlessness and the risk of diaper rash.

A clear sense of when to change a diaper helps you take better care of your baby.

  • There is a wetness indicator for some diapers and you can see at a glance if you need to change the diaper.
  • The diaper is sagging or plump.
  • The smell runs into the air or you can see pee or poop.
  • Put your finger into your baby’s diaper. It’s wet.

What do You Need for a Diaper Change?

Diaper change is not as easy as the literal meaning. The skin of your baby’s bottom is fragile and needs to be properly treated. So, preparing for a diaper change doesn’t mean that only a new diaper is needed, there are other items you need to put on hand.

  • Diapers

Newborns use far more diapers than you can imagine. For the first month, 10 to 12 diapers are needed per day. In the following 2 to 3 months, you may have to change 8 to 10 diapers in one day. Even for the first 3 months, you have to prepare about 800 diapers.
Thus, even if you only need a diaper on hand at one time, you have to stockpile diapers.

  • Wipes or towel

At each diaper change, you’d better clean the area with warm water and a cotton towel or wipes. There are special wipes designed for babies, pre-moistened with water and non-alcoholic. Because alcohol irritates your baby’s skin and can lead to diaper rash.

  • Diaper cream or ointment

Since diaper rash comes to most babies, diaper cream or ointment can help treat and prevent it. Before putting on the new diaper, smear diaper cream or ointment on the diaper area.

  • Changing table or changing pad

They provide places to change your baby on the floor, bed, or couch. Remember to use the safety straps to keep your baby from rolling off.

Since you have to throw away the soiled diapers at specific times on specific days, how to deal with the used diapers has become common trouble for new parents.

“Step-by-step” Guide for Diaper Change

1. Wash your hands

2. Take your supplies on hand
Before changing the diaper, make sure you have well prepared to avoid leaving your baby alone on the changing table.

3. Lay your baby down slowly

4. Remove the used diaper by grasping their ankles and lifting.

5. Put the diaper away
Just put it nearby but out of the reach of your baby to avoid making a mess.

6. Clean the area
Use warm water and a towel or wipes to clean the diaper area. Do pat dry and don’t rub. Because friction may break the fragile skin and cause a rash.
If your baby is a girl, always go from front to back to prevent urinary tract infections.

7. Slide a new diaper under your baby’s bottom

8. Smear the diaper cream or ointment

9. Close the new diaper
Pull the front, colorful markings, of the diaper up between your baby’s legs and up over the belly. Stick the two wings on both sides and make sure it’s not too tight or too loose. If you are able to run two fingers comfortably between the diaper and the stomach, that’s perfect.

10. Replace the clothes over the new diaper

11. Roll up the used diaper and throw it into your Diaper Genie

12. Wash your hands
